How to Use GHL Trigger Links to Automate Contact Tagging and Pipeline Movement

Most coaches using GoHighLevel are sending emails and SMS manually, watching people click links, and then doing nothing with that signal. Trigger Links fix that. One click from a lead can tag them, move them in your pipeline, and fire an entire follow-up sequence — all without you lifting a finger. Here's exactly how to set it up.

The Problem: You're Sending Links That Don't Do Anything

You send a nurture email with a link to your case study. Someone clicks it. That tells you a lot — they're interested, they're warm, they're probably worth a direct follow-up. But in most GHL setups I audit, that click goes nowhere. It opens the page, and then nothing happens. No tag added. No pipeline stage updated. No follow-up triggered. The data evaporates.

After building GoHighLevel systems for over 150 coaches at Systrify, this is one of the most consistent gaps I see. Coaches spend weeks setting up email sequences and then leave the most valuable signal — an actual click — completely untracked and unacted on.

The fix is Trigger Links. They're one of GHL's most powerful and most underused features, and once you understand how they work, you'll want to retrofit them into every email and SMS you've already built.

What GHL Trigger Links Actually Are (And How They Work)

A Trigger Link is a special URL you create inside GoHighLevel that, when clicked, fires a workflow trigger attached to the contact who clicked it. Instead of just taking someone to a webpage, the click becomes an event — and that event can kick off any automation you've built.

Here's the key distinction: a normal link in an email tells you someone clicked (open rate tracking). A Trigger Link tells GHL who clicked, and then executes actions against that specific contact's record in real time.

What can those actions be? Anything in your workflow builder:

That's a lot of automation from a single click. And it takes about 10 minutes to set up once you know where to look.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your First Trigger Link

Here's the exact process I use when building this for clients. Follow these steps in order.

Step 1: Create the Trigger Link. In your GHL sub-account, go to Marketing → Trigger Links. Click Add Trigger Link. Give it a descriptive name (e.g. "Clicked Case Study Link") and paste in the destination URL — this is the actual page the contact will land on. Save it. GHL generates a unique tracking URL for this link.

Step 2: Build the workflow that fires on click. Go to Automation → Workflows → New Workflow. Set the trigger to Contact Trigger Link Clicked and select the Trigger Link you just created. Now add your actions: add a tag, move a pipeline stage, send an SMS, whatever makes sense for this specific signal. Publish the workflow.

Step 3: Replace links in your emails or SMS. Go to any email or SMS template where you'd normally paste a plain URL. Instead, paste your Trigger Link URL. It looks like a normal link to the recipient and takes them to the same destination — but now the click fires your workflow in the background.

Step 4: Test it. Send yourself a test email, click the link, and check the contact record. You should see the tag applied and the pipeline stage updated within seconds. If the workflow isn't firing, double-check that it's published (not in draft) and that the trigger is pointing to the correct Trigger Link.

Three High-Impact Ways to Use Trigger Links in Your Coaching Business

Once you've got the mechanics down, here's how I recommend coaches actually deploy these.

1. The "Interest Signal" tag in nurture sequences. In your standard cold-to-warm nurture sequence, embed a Trigger Link on your most compelling content — a case study, a results video, a free resource. When someone clicks, tag them as "engaged" and simultaneously remove them from the generic nurture and enrol them in a warmer sequence that speaks directly to someone who's already shown interest. This alone typically increases booked calls by 20–30% in systems I build, because the messaging gets sharper at the right moment.

2. The instant follow-up SMS on case study or sales page clicks. Embed a Trigger Link on your sales page link in any email. When someone clicks through to your offer, fire an SMS within 60 seconds: "Hey [FirstName], noticed you just checked out our coaching page — happy to answer any questions, just reply here." The speed of that message is shocking to most leads. They clicked 45 seconds ago and you're already responding. This works because it's not a bot pretending to be you — it's a genuine, warm message that just happens to be automated.

3. Pipeline movement on booking page clicks. Add a Trigger Link to your calendar booking link inside emails. When someone clicks to open the booking page — even if they don't book — move them from "Cold" to "Booking Intent" in your pipeline. Now you have a segment of people who showed intent but didn't convert. That's a highly specific group to follow up with, and you can tailor your outreach accordingly instead of treating them the same as someone who hasn't engaged at all.
